Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.

Helen Keller

When life seems to be beating you down (or you feel like you’re beating yourself up), it can help to enlist a therapist in your corner to support you in getting up for another round. My goal is to support you in developing the capacity to handle the challenges and stresses of life and the ability to recognize your inner strengths and capabilities. Whether it's changing yourself or changing how you think and feel about yourself, therapy is a good place to get unstuck and get going again.

What is psychotherapy?

If you've never been to therapy before you may wondering what is it, what do we do, and how will it help me?

People come to therapy suffering in crisis and pain. Something needs to change but they're not sure what, why, or how. We'll start by meeting weekly. We'll use the first few sessions to get an understanding of what's going on and decide on how to best approach the problem at hand. Then we'll move into an action phase of creating space to make changes, develop skills and develop a narrative of growth. Along the way, we'll check in frequently to make sure we're headed in the right direction and make adjustments as necessary. When things start feel better, you may decide to meet every other week or stop meeting completely when you're ready.

Starting therapy can be awkward and uncomfortable at first. It can feel weird to tell a stranger your innermost thoughts and feelings, especially ones that feel shaming or painful. It can be difficult to open the boxes of feelings and experiences that were easier to just avoid before. As our therapeutic relationship develops, it will become easier to open up and talk about things you may not have talked about before. You will develop the skills and confidence to re-write your story and keep moving forward.
